Today, Amnesty International’s recognized Alicia with it’s Ambassador of Conscience Award. The Ambassador of Conscience Award is Amnesty International’s highest honor. It celebrates individuals and groups who have shown exceptional leadership and courage in championing human rights.
About the award, Alicia said “To be given this great honor and be in the presence of the other incredible people who have been given this award, is a phenomenal and humbling experience. I feel encouraged to continue to be a person with a conscience who shouts out loud about what is happening in the world. A conscience is something special we are all gifted with at birth, no matter who we are. That little voice that speaks out to you and tells you when something is not right. I am so happy that voice yells out to me and says, Alicia, you know that doesn’t feel right. What can you do? That is a question we can all ask ourselves.”
Alicia will accept the award alongside fellow recipient, the Indigenous Peoples of Canada, at the official award’s ceremony in Montreal on May 27th. Past winners include Harry Belafonte, Joan Baez and Ai Weiwei, Malala Yousafzai, and Nelson Mandela.
